M. Shannon Shemwell, 90, of Paducah died at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2010, at Western Baptist Hospital.
Shannon was born November 14, 1920, in Oak Level, Ky., to the late Carl M. and Maud Robert Reed Shemwell of Paducah. He was married to the late Mary Louise Hill Shemwell.
Mr. Shemwell was retired from GAF of Calvert City and was also a retired river engineer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving his country during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Woodlawn Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Masonic Lodge #449 of Paducah. He was an avid UK Wildcats Basketball fan.
Surviving are his daughter, Sydna Holshouser; son-in-law, Tod Holshouser; and grandson, Dalton Holshouser, all of Symsonia; granddaughters, Rebekah Shemwell Wheat of Louisville, Ky., and Sarah Shemwell Meyer of Chapin, South Carolina; two great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and Tammy Wells, a special friend who looked after Shannon like family.
He was also preceded in death by his son, David Merle Shemwell; one brother, Randle Shemwell; and two sisters, Carlene Sowell and Eileen Stewart.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, December 10, 2010, at Hughes Funeral Home of Paducah with Todd Belt officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour Friday at the funeral home.
