Burlond Murphy

June 9, 1923 — January 10, 2013

Burlond Murphy, age 89, of Paducah passed away peacefully at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013, at the Southgate Manor in Metropolis, Illinois.

Born and raised in Paducah, Burlond was a longtime member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church.

He worked as an instrument mechanic at Union Carbide/Martin Marietta for 32 years. His favorite hobby was woodworking. He loved football, baseball and kids.

During World War II, Burlond served in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator with a naval commando unit that participated in the amphibious assault of Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands on November 20-22, 1943, a battle that resulted in over 3,600 American casualties. He stayed at Tarawa for one year at the forward airfield used to support the island hopping campaign against the Japanese. He finished his service at the naval air station in Honolulu.

Burlond is survived by his daughter, Janet Woodling, and her husband, Kenneth, of Houston, Texas; his two sons, Michael Murphy, and his wife, Brenda, of Paducah, and Douglas Murphy, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Timothy Murphy, and his wife Candace, of Pasadena, Calif.; Dr. Kellie Ann Woodling, of Little Rock, Ark.; Katie Woodling, of Lafayette, La., Erin Murphy and Emily Murphy, both of Paducah; and Kerry Murphy and Kyle Murphy, both of Floyds Knobs, Ind.

Burlond was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Martha Smith Murphy, and four brothers. His parents were Charles Raymond and Naomi Golladay Murphy.

A celebration of the life of Burlond Murphy will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013, at the Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah, with the Rev. Larry Walker and the Rev. Timothy Murphy officiating. Entombment with military honors will follow in the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Friends may visit with the family from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2013, at the Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah.
